Best Ultrasonic Testing (UT) Companies

Ultrasonic testing (UT) is the most versatile and widely used non-destructive testing method, capable of detecting internal flaws, measuring wall thickness, characterizing corrosion, and inspecting welds across virtually every industry and material type. UT inspection companies use conventional pulse-echo and through-transmission UT, as well as advanced methods including phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT), time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD), automated ultrasonic testing (AUT), and full matrix capture (FMC) for the most demanding flaw characterization applications. Technicians performing UT must be certified under ASNT SNT-TC-1A or NAS 410, with Level II required for independent interpretation and Level III for procedure development and oversight.

Why these suppliers?

  • UT is the only NDT method capable of combining flaw detection with flaw sizing — critical for fitness-for-service assessments under API 579 and ASME Section XI where flaw height and length determine run/repair/replace decisions.
  • Advanced UT methods (PAUT, TOFD, AUT) provide encoded, reproducible data with permanent digital records, enabling re-analysis without re-inspection and supporting trend monitoring for corrosion growth rate tracking.
  • UT companies in our directory span from conventional UT field service to specialized PAUT lab services, automated corrosion mapping systems, and nuclear-qualified UT providers with ASME Appendix VIII/PDI qualifications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between conventional UT and phased array UT (PAUT)?
Conventional UT uses a single transducer element and fixed beam angle, requiring the technician to manually scan and interpret real-time A-scan data. Phased array UT (PAUT) uses an array of elements that can be electronically steered and focused to multiple angles simultaneously, creating a cross-sectional image (S-scan) of the inspection zone. PAUT provides higher probability of detection, faster scan coverage, better flaw sizing capability, and a permanent encoded image record. For weld inspection, PAUT has largely replaced conventional UT in critical applications because of its superior sensitivity and documentation capability.
What ASNT certification level is required for UT inspection?
ASNT Level I technicians can perform UT under the direction of a Level II or Level III, but cannot independently interpret results. ASNT Level II technicians are qualified to set up equipment, conduct calibrations, perform the inspection, evaluate and interpret indications, and prepare inspection reports. ASNT Level III is required for developing and approving procedures, interpreting codes, and providing Level I/II oversight. For aerospace applications under NAS 410, the certification requirements are similar but administered through a different examination structure with stricter personnel tracking.
What industries use ultrasonic testing most frequently?
Oil and gas (pipeline integrity, vessel and piping wall loss monitoring, weld inspection), petrochemical (corrosion mapping, fitness-for-service), aerospace (composite inspection, titanium and aluminum alloy testing, engine component inspection), nuclear (ASME Section XI in-service inspection, reactor vessel examination), power generation (turbine rotor inspection, boiler tube examination, heat exchanger tube testing), and manufacturing (weld quality verification, forging and casting inspection) are the primary UT markets.
